Consumer Complaint Intelligence

An Area Code-native public dataset demonstrates why a standardized Area Code Market geography can matter.

FTC complaint case study. The FTC Do Not Call Reported Calls API publishes consumer-reported complaint information that can include consumer city, state and Area Code, complaint subject and whether the unwanted call was a recorded message or robocall. The FTC states that the reported-call information is not verified.

The NDS three-level evidence model

LevelMeaningLabel
1Consumer Area Code present in the FTC source record.Observed
2Observed Area Codes aggregated into their governed NDS Area Code Market Family™.Derived
3Complaint activity allocated toward plausible ZIPs using Area Code Market, city/state and crosswalk evidence.Modeled
Why Area Code matters

The source already contains the geography.

NDS is not inventing an Area Code field; the FTC API documents consumer-area-code as a complaint attribute and allows Area Code filtering.

Why market family matters

Overlay codes should not split one market.

Complaint totals can be aggregated from observed Area Codes into one governed market family without pretending the source supplied ZIP.

Why ZIP modeling matters

Local analysis needs labels.

ZIP-level values created from the crosswalk should be identified as NDS allocation estimates, not FTC-reported ZIP complaint counts.
